{"id":639,"date":"2020-04-02T14:06:02","date_gmt":"2020-04-02T14:06:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.casinosites.us\/news\/?p=639"},"modified":"2020-05-15T17:41:25","modified_gmt":"2020-05-15T17:41:25","slug":"penn-national-gaming-furloughs-26000-employees-and-nevada-stays-closed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.casinosites.us\/news\/penn-national-gaming-furloughs-26000-employees-and-nevada-stays-closed\/","title":{"rendered":"Penn National Gaming Furloughs 26,000 Employees and Nevada Stays Closed"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The largest news this week has been the decision by\nPenn National Gaming (PNG) to sell its Tropicana Las Vegas Casino property,\njoining a restructuring effort across the gambling industry to reduce the\nimpact from the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This move is straight out of MGM Resorts\u2019 own\nplaybook, after the company announced previously that it would assume <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com\/investing\/2019\/10\/25\/mgm-resorts-5-billion-cash-grab.aspx\">a\nmore asset-light strategy<\/a> to help it sell off real estate\nproperty and focus purely on branding and operating casinos and sportsbooks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Something that PNG is now endorsing in full. Penn National won\u2019t cease too much control, though, and still keep its real estate in check by selling it off to Gaming &amp; Leisure Properties (GLPI), a spinoff the company completed back in 2013. The deal also features a Hollywood Casino in Perryville, Maryland which will be discussed later. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter aligncenter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The timing of the Barstool deal seemingly not good for Penn National Gaming.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ReNmTxORpZ\">https:\/\/t.co\/ReNmTxORpZ<\/a><\/p>&mdash; brant james (@brantjames) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/brantjames\/status\/1243937440030744578?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 28, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>GLPI will lease the property back to PNG for $337.5\nmillion in rent credits. On top of this news, there is also the fact that Penn\nNational had to furlough as many as 26,000 employees across the United States\non Wednesday, April 1, due to the rapid COVID-19 slowdown in the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Estimated 850 \u201cmission critical\u201d employees have been\nleft onboard. The rest, however, will have to take the unpaid leave and hope\nthat the coronavirus outbreak will be resolved soon so that the industry can\nreturn back to normal. This is not very likely, however, especially now that\nNevada\u2019s own casinos will remain closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"nevadas-closure-to-extend-and-cover-casinos-through-april-30\">Nevada\u2019s Closure to Extend and Cover Casinos Through April 30 <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When Nevada closed down its casinos to fight the\nCOVID-19 pandemic on March 17, the industry thought it would be a quick\nrecovery from there on in. However, Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak believes that if\nanything, measures need to be ramped up to adequately address the coronavirus\nthreat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All nonessential activities have been suspended and\nthat includes casinos and gambling establishments. &nbsp;Gov. Sisolak has now extended the lockdown by\nanother 30 days through April 30. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He has also been trying to <a href=\"https:\/\/mynews4.com\/news\/local\/gov-sisolak-requests-major-disaster-declaration-from-president-trump\">secure\nfederal help<\/a> from President Donald Trump. On Tuesday, the\ngovernor sent a formal request for assistance. Nevada, as of the moment of reporting,\nhas 1,300 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 31 deaths. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While health concerns expressed by Gov. Sisolak are\njustifiable and he has acted according to what leading epidemiologists\nrecommend, he is also aware of the financial and economic risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of these risks already started showing up with\nprices of Las Vegas casino operators taking a strong hit. Eldorado Resorts lost\n20% on Tuesday and it was far from the only one. Caesars Entertainment\nregistered another 18.8% down. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Penn National Gaming took a 20% hit and Churchill\nDowns Inc took a 16% tumble on its share value. Similar percentages were shared\nby other companies, although much better. For instance, Wynn Resorts only\nslipped 10.3% of its value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Boyd Gaming tumbled another 9.7% and MGM Resorts skipped\n0.25%, thanks to the company\u2019s policy that has allowed it to optimize and shake\noff financial risk through smart real-estate management and a diverse portfolio.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"caesars-takes-a-massive-13m-penalty-hit-in-the-uk\">Caesars Takes a Massive \u00a313M Penalty Hit in the UK <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While things at home have been on lockdown due to\nCOVID-19, across the pond, Caesars Entertainment has incurred a hefty and\nserious penalty. This is one of the highest fines the UK Gambling Commission\nhas issued this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Caesars will now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/58057981-2ec8-4597-8d8e-8e57abb9b006\">have\nto pay $16.1 million (\u00a313\nmillion)<\/a> for what\nthe regulator described as systematic failings in the VIP program of the\noperator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result\nof the investigation and fine, three VIP managers have also had to surrender\ntheir licenses, highlighting the Gambling Commission\u2019s shift from holding just\ncompanies accountable to also looking into the rank-and-file officers directly\nresponsible for regulatory failures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Gambling\nCommission focused on 11 land-based casinos in the period January 2016 and\nDecember 2018, establishing numerous shortcomings. Neil McArthur, executive\ndirector at the regulator, stressed the important of companies <em>knowing their\ncustomers<\/em> before accepting any money from any customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore,\nthe regulator spoke about other failures regarding the enforcement of\nanti-money laundering (AML) practices specifically. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"sports-bettors-will-have-to-miss-wimbledon-this-year\">Sports Bettors Will Have to Miss Wimbledon This Year <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The gambling\nsector in the United States cannot expect to recuperate any time soon as another\nmajor event, the Wimbledon Championships won\u2019t be taking place this year,\nmaking for difficult decisions ahead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The news is big in its magnitude as it was one of the few events that sports bettors have been looking for after most sports out there have been cancelled.
