With all casino venues across the country \u2013 both commercial and tribal \u2013 shut-down completely, as many as <strong>1.8 million workers <\/strong>in the sector are at risk. Many workers have been furloughed, but not all is gloom as companies such as Wynn Resorts and Las Vegas Sands have decided to keep their employees for two months on the payroll covering base salaries, tips and benefits. In the meantime, the <strong>American Gaming Association (AGA)<\/strong> has riled against a new <strong>Paycheck Protection Program (PPP)<\/strong> that could leave gaming companies out of a $2.2 trillion emergency economic package. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"new-jersey-drops-16000-employees-as-pressure-on-the-gaming-sector-intensifies\">New Jersey Drops 16,000 Employees as Pressure on the Gaming Sector Intensifies   <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Atlantic\nCity, New Jersey was among the first to feel massive lay-offs, as 16,000\nemployees have been furloughed, The Press of Atlantic City has revealed in a\nreport last weekend. Hard Rock Hotel and Casino and Ocean Resort Casino had to\nlet go the most employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where\npossible, casino giants have tried to make amendments. Hard Rock workers for\nexample were allowed to take their paid leaves as well as 80 additional hours\nearned over the years of working at the venue. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Terry\nGlebocki<\/strong>, CEO at\nOcean Casino, expressed hopes that by temporary laying off employees, affected\nworkers would be able to apply for unemployment compensation. More properties\nhave been affected by the move, including Caesars Entertainment, Resorts\nCasino, Borgata Hotel Casino &amp; Spa and MGM Resorts International. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each of\nthese properties is facing difficult decisions ahead occasioned by the complete\nshut-down of the gambling industry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"gaming-could-be-left-out-of-the-paycheck-protection-program\">Gaming Could be Left Out of the Paycheck Protection Program  <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>American\nGaming Association (AGA) CEO <strong>Bill Miller<\/strong> has warned the US Small\nBusiness Administration (SBA) to reconsider a package of measures known as\nPaycheck Protection Program that is designed to allow companies employing more\nthan 500 people to apply for a $10 million relief package to help cushion the\nrepercussions of the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet,\ncompanies that generate over one-third of their revenue through gambling might\nnot be eligible to this relief package. Miller described the package as <em>discriminatory\n<\/em>as it specifically left out one of the industries that was the most\naffected by the pandemic and he further stressed that gambling was employing\n1.8 million people in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His appeal\nfalling on deaf years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americangaming.org\/new\/aga-writes-potus-regarding-sbas-paycheck-protection-program\/\">Miller addressed a letter to <strong>US\nPresident Donald Trump<\/strong><\/a>, garnering the signatures of 16 Congressmen from both political factions\nand asking POTUS to act in favor of protecting the industry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"colorado-governor-ned-lamont-says-no-to-tribal-gambling-online\">Colorado Governor Ned Lamont Says No to Tribal Gambling Online <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Faced with\nmounting pressure, the gambling industry in the United States has been trying\nto adapt. Connecticut tribal operators <strong>Foxwoods Resort Casino<\/strong> and <strong>Mohegan\nSun<\/strong> have requested from CT Gov. Ned Lamont to endorse a new bill that would\nallow them to move their activities online immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In their\nargumentation, the tribes stressed the economic importance of their activities,\nbut <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courant.com\/coronavirus\/hc-pol-online-gambling-coronavirus-20200404-20200404-aw4jpo33svfvtpznyq5pggdrhm-story.html\">Gov. Lamont argued against the\nsuggestion<\/a> that it\nwould breach all legislative procedure to just go-ahead online gambling without\nfollowing due process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This has put\nthe tribes and the governor at daggers drawn. Even before the COVID-19 struck,\nLamont had been pushing for sports betting conditions that expunge any\nprotectionism from the state, i.e. that tribes would not have any exclusivity\nover the vertical and have to compete against established commercial brands. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"wind-creek-bethlehem-not-giving-up-on-employees\">Wind Creek Bethlehem Not Giving Up on Employees  <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wind\nCreek Bethlehem<\/strong> will\nnot give up on its employees and keep them through May 31, making for one of\nthe boldest moves in the iGaming sector. This is what Wind Creek Hospitality\ncasino owner <strong>Julia Corwin <\/strong>said on Wednesday, reaffirming the company\u2019s\ndetermination to guarantee the well-being of the 2,500 employees that it\npresently employees on its sight in Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pennsylvania\nis one of the first places to be hit by the coronavirus as well and Wind Creek\nin particular, reported infected staff members, which has prompted even quicker\nreaction time on the part of the upper management. Yet, the company is not\nalone in doing \u201cthe right thing,\u201d as casino mogul <strong>Sheldon Adelson<\/strong> said\nwhen he announced that <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/04\/01\/adelson-im-paying-all-my-workers-for-2-months-so-should-any-business-that-can\/\">he would keep his own people enrolled<\/a> for at least another month to ride\nthe industry through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both Julia\nCorwin and Sheldon Adelson deserve praise as they have addressed a difficult\nsituation in a way that has sought to protect employees from harm. However,\nunless the industry returns by early June, the majority of gambling companies\nwould have no choice but to suspend payments completely. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"when-the-grace-period-is-over-eldorado-furloughing-employees\">When the Grace Period is Over: Eldorado Furloughing Employees <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After\nsupporting employees for a month, <strong>Eldorado Resorts<\/strong> will have to take the\nnext step in its plan to contain the COVID-19-induced economic slowdown \u2013\nfurloughing employees.
